"The professional, qualified and experienced Marine Surveyor exists by his ability to examine the condition of yachts and other vessels in a factual unbiased manner."

Care should be taken when choosing a Marine Surveyor, the industry is unregulated meaning any individual can set themselves up and call themselves a Marine Surveyor

There are two internationally recognised British based organisations that represent surveyors. The International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) and The Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA). All surveyors are vetted before they can join either of these organisations and to keep their membership both organisations have systems which ensure continuous professional development. Any legitimate practicing surveyor would be expected to be a member of some form of Surveying organisation. Before you choose any surveyor please check their credentials.

Bodrum Marine Services has experienced surveyors who have carried out surveys throughout the Eastern Mediterranean, The Middle East, France and the UK. We are all members of one or both of the organisations listed above and all also have specific marine surveying qualifications. In addition to this we have surveyors recognised to carry out government regulated surveys for registration and for British registered Commercial Yachts.

All our Surveys are carried out in accordance with the codes of practice drawn up by the internationally recognised organisations listed above. If Bodrum Marine Services carries out a survey for you we will spend the time to answer any questions about the survey and are happy to give any yachting advice. We will not pass on any information about the survey without first receiving your permission.

Marine Surveying covers a very broad field. At Bodrum Marine Services we have the advantage of being a team, we are able to pool our knowledge to provide the best possible service, see our team profiles and testimonials.

Undecided on a yacht? - We recommend an Appraisal Survey

Joe Rowles aloft a Swan 75 mast

An Appraisal Survey, commonly known as a walk through survey is recommended if you are unsure of what type of yacht you wish to buy, or if there are a number of your ‘chosen ‘ yachts on the market and you wish to narrow down which one is the best for you.

The Appraisal Survey is an economical way of basically evaluating a yacht, or number of yachts and will help the buyer decide if the yacht is suitable for them. Bodrum Marine Services often carries out appraisal surveys when the buyer has never seen the yacht. In the past we have surveyed a vessel in Greece and sent the survey in video format to New Zealand. The survey format and procedure is flexible so it can be tailored directly to the buyers needs. If you have specific requirements contact us.

Bodrum Marine Services carries out Appraisal Surveys on all types of vessels throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. All our surveyors are experienced, hold qualifications in marine surveying and are members of surveying organisations including; International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) or The Yacht Designers and surveyors association (YDSA). Our rates are competitive, fill in the online survey enquiry form for a quotation.

The Appraisal Survey will identify any very major problems with the Yacht and give a basic general overview of the condition. If the buyer decides that the yacht is suitable it is then recommended that before purchase a Full Condition Survey is carried out. The fee for the Appraisal Survey will be deducted from the price of the Full Condition Survey (minus expenses) if carried out on the same vessel.

Appraisal Surveys for yachts up to and around 12 metres or about 40 feet are normally completed within two or three hours. Even for a large yacht the Appraisal Survey would be finished within one day.

Before the purchase of a yacht a Full Condition Survey is always recommended.

To receive a quote for an Appraisal Survey, fill in the online survey enquiry form or contact us directly with you requirements.

Buying a yacht? – We recommend a Full Condition Survey.

Joe Rowles aloft a Swan 75 mast

The aim of a Full Condition Survey, commonly known as a Pre-Purchase Survey is to identify and detail the yacht's defects, so for a new buyer help them decide if they wish to proceed with the purchase of their chosen yacht.

The Full Condition Survey is normally carried out once a new buyer has decided which yacht that want. If a new buyer is still undecided the much less detailed Appraisal Survey could be considered, this survey only gives a superficial overview of the yacht's condition so is always followed by a Full Condition Survey before any purchase.

The Full Condition Survey is recommended if; you are buying a second hand yacht, having your new yacht handed over after delivery or having your yacht returned after the end of contract with a Yacht Charter Company.

Bodrum Marine Services have carried out Full condition surveys throughout The Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East and Europe including France and the UK. Surveys have been carried out on all types of Yachts including; sailing yachts and power boats both large and small and yachts constructed of various materials including; GRP, wood, steel, aluminium and composite. Each type of vessel and construction material requires a specific approach and equipment.

Bodrum Marine Services carries out full condition surveys in accordance with internationally recognised codes of practice drawn up by the international surveying organisations.

In our history of surveying we have had no customer disappointed when they have had a Full Condition Survey, either because they sail or motor away with confidence in their newly purchased yacht or happy that they have not proceeded with the purchase and taken on previously unforeseen yacht repairs.

The Full Condition Survey is a detailed survey to access the structural condition of a yacht as well as checking and testing the yacht's equipment. A detailed report is provided explaining the findings of the survey. Within the report problems found are listed and information given on their importance and recommendations for repair.

Generally for yachts up to and around 12 metres or about 40 feet the survey can be completed in one full day however it does depend on the type of yacht and equipment onboard. For yachts over this length the survey can run over two or more days.

Bodrum Marine Services are unique in that the price of a full condition survey includes; a sea trial on all yachts and rig inspection, including going up the mast on sailing yachts (if safe to do so).

The Full Condition Survey is carried out in three parts: In water inspection, sea trial then lift of the yacht followed by out of water inspection.

The inspection can be divided into the following areas:

  • Hull, superstructure and decks
  • Sern gear
  • Skin fittings
  • Cathodic protection (anodes)
  • Fastenings
  • Ground tackle and mooring arrangements
  • Windows, hatches and port lights
  • Handrails, stanchions and lifelines
  • Davits, boarding ladders etc.
  • Masts, spars and rigging
  • Sails
  • Machinery and electrical installations
  • Fuel installations
  • Bilge and general pumping installations
  • Gas installations
  • Freshwater installations
  • Toilet installations
  • Lifesaving equipment
  • Fire fighting equipment
  • Ancillary equipment

Once the survey has been completed we guarantee to provide the survey report within ten working days but it is often delivered much sooner. We will spend the time to answer any questions about the survey and are happy to give any yachting advice.

When your Yacht gets to a certain age, or there is a change in ownership your Insurance Company could require that you have a Survey for Insurance.

Bodrum Marine Services are recognised by most Insurance Companies, all our surveyors are experienced, hold qualifications in marine surveying and are members of surveying organisations including; International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) or The Yacht Designers and surveyors association (YDSA).

When an Insurance Company asks for a survey it is important that Bodrum Marine Services are provided with the details, this enables us to limit the survey inspection to the exact requirements of the Insurance Company making the survey cost effective for the yacht owner e.g. is a out of water inspection required, does the rig require inspection from aloft. Fill in the online survey enquiry form for a quotation.

A report is provided explaining the findings of the Insurance Survey. Within the report problems found during the survey are listed and information given on their importance and recommendations for repair. If you wish we can send the report directly to your Insurers.

Ultrasound survey

Joe Rowles aloft a Swan 75 mast

Ultrasound Surveys are generally carried out to measure the hull plating thickness on steel yachts. Hundreds of readings are taken around the yachts hull to look for areas where the hull plating is thin.

The Ultrasound Survey is not confined to hulls of steel yachts, bulkheads, decks and structures can also be measured as well as Aluminium and GRP hulls and structures, contact us for your specific requirements.

Bodrum Marine Services carries out Ultrasound Surveys on steel yachts as part of a Full Condition Survey. We have the latest ultrasonic thickness gauge instruments, they are non destructive and accurate readings are made without removing any of the paint or filler system. Our primary instrument is the Cygnus 4 multiple echo ultrasonic thickness gauge, for more information on our instruments please follow the link.

Bodrum Marine Services carries out Ultrasound Surveys on all types of vessels throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. All our surveyors are experienced, hold qualifications in marine surveying and are members of surveying organisations including; International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) or The Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA). Rigging survey

Joe Rowles aloft a Swan 75 mast

Bodrum Marine Services have Surveyors specifically trained in Surveying Rigs.  The Rig Survey is recommended before you carry out any period of extended cruising or when your Yacht's Rigging Wires (standing rigging) are more than a few years old.  Some Insurance Companies will require that you replace your rigging wires every ten years, other  Insurance companies will only continue to insure you if you have a Rig Survey.

There are basically two methods of surveying the rig, with the mast stepped (standing) or un-stepped (lowered). The most effective method of surveying the rig is to un-step the mast and inspect the spars when supported horizontally on stands.  This should be done periodically during the life of a sailing yacht.  Interim inspections can be carried out with the rig stepped (standing).  Contact us for our recommendation.

Insurance companies will generally not expect a rig to be un-stepped for inspection, so at Bodrum Marine Services the Rig Survey for insurance generally involves the surveyor going up the mast (inspection from aloft).

Bodrum Marine Services carries out Rig Surveys on all types of rigs throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. We have experience in surveying spars constructed of different materials including; Aluminium alloy, carbon, wood and steel.

Rig surveys for yachts up to and around 12 metres or about 40 feet are normally completed within two or three hours. Rig Surveys on larger yachts with multiple spars are generally completed within one day.

The Rig Survey includes an inspection of the following:

  • Mast(s), including mast base, cap and tangs
  • Boom(S) and fittings
  • Rigging wires (standing rigging)
  • Rigging terminals
  • Turnbuckles (rigging screws) wire locking and split pinning
  • Chain plates

A report is provided explaining the findings of the Rig Survey.  Within the report problems found during the survey are listed and information given on their importance and recommendations for repair.

Once the survey has been completed we guarantee to provide the survey report within ten working days but it is often delivered much sooner.  We will spend the time to answer any questions about the survey and are happy to give any yachting advice.

Machinery and Systems Survey

Joe Rowles aloft a Swan 75 mast

Bodrum Marine Services have Surveyors specifically trained in Surveying Yacht Machinery and Systems.  The Machinery and Systems Survey is recommended after a Yacht refit, where machinery and systems have changed, or on a newly commissioned yacht to test the new systems.

The Machinery and Systems survey will almost always include a sea trial, engines will be run and operated from all control stations.  The engine will be performance tested to engine manufacturer's specifications.  All the ships systems will be run and tested for operation.  Systems that Bodrum Marine Services regularly test during Machinery and Systems Survey include;

Main engine tested for performance under load

  • Gearbox for smooth operation in ahead and reverse
  • Bow/stern thrusters and trim tabs
  • Generator performance under load
  • Steering lock to lock when moving ahead and astern, autopilot system
  • Fresh water systems; tanks, pumps and water maker operation
  • Sewage system; toilets, holding tanks and pumping
  • Bilge pumping
  • Fire fighting systems
  • Batteries and charging systems
  • Heating systems
  • Refrigeration systems
  • Air conditioning; pumps, handling units including performance test
  • Cooking, gas/electric
  • Windlass and winches tested under load

Before the survey Bodrum Marine Services will require information on the Yachts systems, this enables us to prepare a clear and defined scope of Survey.  Contact us with your specific requirements or for our recommendations.

A report is provided explaining the findings of the Machinery and Systems Survey.  Within the report problems found during the survey are listed and information given on their importance and recommendations for repair.

Once the survey has been completed we guarantee to provide the survey report within ten working days but it is often delivered much sooner.  We will spend the time to answer any questions about the survey and are happy to give any yachting advice.

Damage Surveys

Joe Rowles aloft a Swan 75 mast

We are aware of the importance of carrying out this type of survey promptly so that damage caused directly by the accident can be more easily identified.

The Damage Survey can also be carried out for a private owner or yacht manager.  Contact us with your requirements.

The Damage Survey only looks at the specific area of damage on the yacht and generally one function of the survey is to find the cause or reason for the damage.

Bodrum Marine services carries out Damage Surveys throughout the Eastern Mediterranean on all types of yachts.

A report is provided explaining the findings of the Damage Survey.  The report is factual in detailing the damage and gives recommendations for repair and often an estimate of repair costs.

To receive a quote for a Damage Survey, fill in the online survey enquiry form or contact us directly with you requirements.

Valuation Surveys

Joe Rowles aloft a Swan 75 mast

The Valuation Survey is the Surveyors opinion as to the fair market value of the Yacht at the time of survey.  This type of survey is often a requirement of finance companies if money is to be borrowed to buy a yacht, or by insurance companies prior to issuing cover.

Bodrum Marine Services carries out Valuation Surveys on all types of vessels throughout the Eastern Mediterranean.  All our surveyors are recognised by most financial institutions and insurance companies that may require a Valuation Survey.

The Valuation Survey is often carried out as part of a Full Condition Survey or Insurance Survey.  If the Valuation Survey is carried out separately the limitations of this type of survey will clearly be stated.  For example if the Yacht is only inspected while afloat this will be stated in the Valuation document.  If a financial institution or Insurance Company ask you for a Valuation Survey you will need to find out their exact requirements.

To receive a quote for a Valuation Survey fill in the online survey enquiry form or contact us directly with you requirements.
